London’s most essential and exciting music and art space, Studio 338, is pleased to unveil its grand plans for the first part of 2016. After a mammoth opening party, there will be plenty more label showcases and special events from returning friends and family, as well as a host of carefully curated new acts and brands.
Studio 338 is famed for its no-expense-spared approach to production, for its exclusive party brands, rare headline sets and surprise events. Over winter it is investing once more, with a new double-height steel and glass atrium being installed from January onward, thereby ensuring that it’s as fresh and unique as ever in 2016.
Says Dan of the new improvements, "I think we have done pretty well so far with some clever innovations to get the very best from what is, from an acoustic stand point, an outdoor arena in zone 2 of London but really we have reached the limit of how far we can go with that. Our new roof will be 10 meters higher and made from a specialist triple glazed, acoustically toughened glass which attenuates sound significantly even at the lowest sub bass frequencies. Not only that but it will be 10 meters higher and will include a 180 degree wrap around mezzanine above the terrace. It will look and sound amazing, retaining the feeling of being outdoors but with a better regulated temperature, hugely improved sound and even more character aesthetically."
The New Year kicks off with a bang on February 6th with Tania Vulcano, Route 94, wAFF and Anek, and just a week later on the 13th one of Studio 338’s many great partnerships also kicks off, this time with acclaimed Manchester and Ibiza club Sankeys kicking off their season with a stylish session featuring Alexis Raphael, East End Dubs, resident Jozef K and house stars Waifs & Strays.
From there the quality and diversity levels remain on-point, and Barcelona-based party brand Elrow make a welcome return on the 27th. Following on from the Carnival and El Bronx themes, Elrow this time takes us into the psychedelic world of 'The Trip’, inspired by the psychedelic sixties, an iconic era of free-love and hedonism. The costumes, crowds and colours at this one are sure to be mesmerising and it will sell out, so act fast. Special guests will also headline and in the past these have been Skream, Jackmaster, Eats Everything, Dusky & Japser James so expect something equally big, as well a wealth of zany characters and crazy goings-on.
The final party in February on the 28th is an Abode Welcome Back Special. One of the foremost events in all of the UK, Adobe keep on outdoing themselves with each event and sell out well in advance regardless of secret guests. In fact, there will be two of them at this show as well as the usual fresh selection of talent on the decks. Add in the famed production and much-loved Abode atmosphere and you have another recipe for magical musical success.
Then another new party gets in on the act in the form of edgy, underground Ibiza crew Do Not Sleep on March 5th (as well as then a second party on April 2nd). They made a big impact on the White Isle in 2015 and with a new label on the go and parties around Europe all making headlines, this one with Darius Syrossian as well as some special guests, both of whom play regularly with the house tastemaker, is sure to be the start of something brilliantly fresh.
Anyone who has been to Studio 338 will know that one of the many highlights of the year are the events with Sven Vath’s all-conquering Cocoon brand. It returns with some mind-blowing production, label favourites, guests and lots more one March 12th.
March 24th finds Cirque Du Soul—a travelling collective energy of colour, magic and dance with open-minded partygoers, massive musical variety, weird and wonderful backdrops, and an unrivalled attention to detail unique to urban clubbing— back at Studio 338. Anyone attending needs to wear long tails and corsets, top hats and canes, glitter, sequins and feathers, blacks, reds, golds and promise to sink into the signature cocktail of burlesque, bass and uninhibited bohemia that characterises this great brand.
Another new signing for the Studio 338 team is Clockwork Orange, a somewhat legendary Ibiza night that welcomes eternal stars of the house and rave scene in the form of Mr C., David Morales, Seb Fontaine, Brandon Block, Tall Paul and Alex P. This will be a very special Easter event that also finds the night celebrating its 23rd birthday. What started out as a party in London soon began touring the UK and then went on to Ibiza to draw record-breaking crowds at clubs like Es Paradis. It made headlines, featured in TV shows and picked up plenty of press as a result, and truly carries the torch for all inclusive, fun-driven party frolics right up to the present day.
Another Easter Special follows with Half Baked sure to deliver another massive lineup, all of whom will keep you dancing under their famed glowing cycles dangling from the roof on Sunday 27th March.
Into April and Abode make a great return on Sunday the 3rd, with all their usual focus on quality underground acts sure to bring the cool cats out of the woodwork, then on the 9th it’s the Viva Spring Rave, which will be their first show since the capacity NYE party that people are still talking about. Joining the tech house king boss man that is Steve Lawler will be fellow tastemaker and Moon Harbour chief Matthias Tanzmann with more to come.Tech house parties don’t come better than this.
April 16th sees a truly tasteful affair from Kehakuma, 338 have pulled out all the stops to serve up a house lovers dream lineup: there are stars of the old and the new all playing, with pioneers left right and centre all set to do their thing in the new atrium. Legendary Pampa man Robag Wruhme, Chicago don Chez Damier, Berlin party starters Italojohnson, cult sound designer and producer Matthew Herbert plus Mr Tophat & Art Alfie all get in on the action in what’s surely to be one of London’s finest ever parties. Just a day after on April 17th, Lee Burridge’s globally acclaimed label and carefully considered party brand All Day I Dream will also be hosting an event with the usual conceptual production, escapist vibes and blissfully melancholic house and techno on tap from the man himself plus key associates.
Sankeys are then back for a Spring Rave for another all day and night session on the 23rd of April with the legendary Riva Starr and techno heavyweight Harvey Mckay both the first names out of the bag.
